All we have done is add an additional support to this basic armature to raise the piece of the plane of the base.<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3nNeI8DArLX0NCR8O7zar0eXmdxVm7To8iuFVtsKLmLEYbVkTnEGVLQb6x98Wg3oECi1YWMF1qec3utX9zzLX3SYT96gV-m5cLYYNpol5Tp01JK4tQ5elRHXCs_K1gHlMa-yi1Sk9j1lR/s640/blogger-image--1363611693.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3nNeI8DArLX0NCR8O7zar0eXmdxVm7To8iuFVtsKLmLEYbVkTnEGVLQb6x98Wg3oECi1YWMF1qec3utX9zzLX3SYT96gV-m5cLYYNpol5Tp01JK4tQ5elRHXCs_K1gHlMa-yi1Sk9j1lR/s640/blogger-image--1363611693.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The two sides of the armature are shaped and cut to match the layout. In addition, a longer piece of wire is added to the group to support the prebaked polymer skull.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinZiLtChRleb3_ugg1wtii_eD_NJwwmBBZ-Z0Jmty8JGPH2LniKkOdFdjvMLaqtHrlHP0QIblrqWw-LBG2cjQytLQ4HujYt4f31n1Tgbx8Crro28jg62dp9tIf28CzPaEGUDq4WBqLHjwf/s640/blogger-image--939720976.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinZiLtChRleb3_ugg1wtii_eD_NJwwmBBZ-Z0Jmty8JGPH2LniKkOdFdjvMLaqtHrlHP0QIblrqWw-LBG2cjQytLQ4HujYt4f31n1Tgbx8Crro28jg62dp9tIf28CzPaEGUDq4WBqLHjwf/s640/blogger-image--939720976.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">All the parts of the armature are ready to assemble. <span style="font-size: large;">Welcome to 2013!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I want to thank you all for staying tuned in while I got the gallery up and running. Now back to work on sculpting.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The first piece I will post this year was suggested by The Mertailor <a href="https://themertailor.com/store/">https://themertailor.com/store/</a></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">It will be a re-creation of a scene from a well known movie but I will be altering it as not to infringe upon copyrights</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8504/8339000761_0fd7e80fb6_m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8504/8339000761_0fd7e80fb6_m.jpg" width="273" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> </span><span style="font-size: small;">Because the sculpture will be very complex, I will need to <span style="font-size: small;">draw it out to get the armature correct. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">Here are the things to be considered during the design stage:</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">1. How will the mermai<span style="font-size: small;">ds touch the base?</span></span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">2. How <span style="font-size: small;">will the boat be suspended?</span></span></span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">3. How will the th<span style="font-size: small;">ird mermaid </span>be supported or <span style="font-size: small;">attached<span style="font-size: small;"> </span> to the set?</span></span> </span></span> </span></span><br />
4. What will the base material be? <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">This sketch shows what the final piece <span style="font-size: small;">should look like.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">There will be two mermaids leaning on the gunwales of the <span style="font-size: small;">dinghy. They will be the supports for the rest of the sculpture. Their tales will touch on a base of green marble which will have enough weight to <span style="font-size: small;">keep this from tipping over. The boat will be supported by rods in the armatures of these two lovely ladies. The boat will then support the last mermaid and the sailor will sit in the boat.</span></span> </span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8360/8339977400_72732f1b04_m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8360/8339977400_72732f1b04_m.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: small;">I start this piece by finding a wooden <span style="font-size: small;">dinghy model which has the look I want. A few hours (and quite a few dollars) later</span></span>, I have the majority of the model built so I can make the armatures for the figures to the proper scale. Note that parts of the boat are not in place yet since the supports for the boat and the last mermaids will need to be shaped and installed under the gunwales before it is finished.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8221/8338923161_b6ee6d6c7d_m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8221/8338923161_b6ee6d6c7d_m.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The armature is made following my basic armature layout which can be found in an earlier post on the blog. The armature is three 14 gauge wire pieces which are wrapped together with foil tape.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8214/8339975252_d462104e64_m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8214/8339975252_d462104e64_m.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The armature is padded with foil to bulk out the armature so the over laying clay will be about 3/8" thick.<br />
The foil and wire are then covered with masking tape to keep oxidation from being transferred to the clay.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8498/8338907153_948b3c1202_m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8498/8338907153_948b3c1202_m.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Clay is applied to the armature and detailed. The sailor will just sit in the boat so there is no need to add set pins to tie him into it.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">More to follow. Have a great <span style="font-size: large;">clay day!</span></span><br />

I wanted this image in my gallery (drop in at 24 West Orange, Lancaster, PA if you are in town) so I made her again with a longer cloak and base. She would be beautiful on someone's mantle.<br />
She will be listed in our Ebay store soon.<br />
Thanks for having a look!<br />

I will try to include as many details and tips as I can while doing this piece. Feel free to ask details if I miss something.<br />
For complex sculptures; in this case a cantilevered figure, pre-planning is essential for strength.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHWCN-renZQ-Pi4xlGLAqT2ZktkqVsaJ4FDjgdokkVBoks6RQ_Fek_OoAQrkMZD-OPXPVNOv8wCwm-nf432tIrZ0w9RVgauuK7jtLKpYIP46Rb12jaYH_Bm2YGJjnNBnGZ0i-MOG_pU0S6/s1600/img002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="270" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHWCN-renZQ-Pi4xlGLAqT2ZktkqVsaJ4FDjgdokkVBoks6RQ_Fek_OoAQrkMZD-OPXPVNOv8wCwm-nf432tIrZ0w9RVgauuK7jtLKpYIP46Rb12jaYH_Bm2YGJjnNBnGZ0i-MOG_pU0S6/s400/img002.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Here is a very fast sketch of the concept for this piece. <br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This overlay shows the armature inside the figures.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The main support (black) is either a rod or series of wire and tubes which will support the two figures and will run from the base through the body of the bird to end as a socket for the support in the hand of the child. In this case I used a 14 gauge wire inside a 5/32 brass tube as the main support.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The rest of the bird armature is a 14 gauge wire which will be attached to the main support (red).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Support for the child is a simple wire armature (if you are not familiar with this, look in the older posts on the blog) with a 3/16 tube over the left arm wire which slips over the end of the main support tube (orange).</div>

Sorry I have been absent but getting the gallery up and running as well as finishing some commissions has taken a bit more time than I had figured on.<br />
Will begin posting soon. Until then, here are some new pieces finished in the last week.</div>Madsculptorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04163312835415502274noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1207002758082734725.post-41707410275800791242012-03-24T10:26:00.000-04:002012-03-24T10:26:08.387-04:00WINGS<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Thought we would take a little more time to go into more depth on how to make some of the basic things which we all take for granted. A folded piece of thin leather is cut as the support for the wire which will be inside it and the feathers which will cover it. This s the sized to fit in the areas covered by the primary coverts, secondary coverts and the marginal coverts (see above diagram) <br />

These are coque (rooster) feathers which are naturally bronze and show bronze, green, and black when dyed.<br />
The feathers are sorted by shape and size.<br />
Many feathers are going to have a directional shape to them meaning that they belong on the left or right side of the bird. Use this same determination when arranging feathers on your wings. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZrxN2AG_3aUXW871LSv1-S3hx_9OTNKO7Js_K218WVQiws0CK_xfOEPPOcQwnIRZn2VeFzfFCLu1Rfmxg4eHNqfbD3i_N1TJmoxLon51AYkXEksFZWL6SY16knNmZ6iyAgaRZwjPLSDvS/s1600/angel+009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZrxN2AG_3aUXW871LSv1-S3hx_9OTNKO7Js_K218WVQiws0CK_xfOEPPOcQwnIRZn2VeFzfFCLu1Rfmxg4eHNqfbD3i_N1TJmoxLon51AYkXEksFZWL6SY16knNmZ6iyAgaRZwjPLSDvS/s320/angel+009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> Once the feathers are sorted and arranged, a layer of glue is applied to the open leather and the first row of primary and secondary feathers are placed into the glue starting with the tips of the wing and heading toward the body. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHcPg3rohlV9qQpHNyR3D_I_9_kx0xK4fPnNOMYAmoU-X_ISAPxPIT6ZDOZCrkodF1P08Ztj_hHPuzctYosh9jp-aFCLmdnmUZ9QhKnuLE8UWVcBcUgPV1Q9cXiwe0HjlwBOmqW3qmJQCU/s1600/angel+010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHcPg3rohlV9qQpHNyR3D_I_9_kx0xK4fPnNOMYAmoU-X_ISAPxPIT6ZDOZCrkodF1P08Ztj_hHPuzctYosh9jp-aFCLmdnmUZ9QhKnuLE8UWVcBcUgPV1Q9cXiwe0HjlwBOmqW3qmJQCU/s320/angel+010.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> ***The diagram above is drawn from the top of the wing. As you look at the top of a wing, each feather lays under the previous feather (for support and sealing the wing against air infiltration) from the tip of the wing to the body of the bird. When you attach the feathers following the same direction, each feather will overlap the previous feather in the same manner.<br />

The wires are then bent down slightly so they will not work their way out of the torso as they are displayed. The wing is shaped by bending the wire inside the wing. Do this while the glue is still setting so you can shift the feathers slightly to cover any holes in your feather pattern. You can add more cover feathers if gaps develop while shaping the wing.<br />
Using black leather would be a good idea so the support is less likely to show. I was out of black this day!<br />

Fabric on small figures should be treated as if it was in scale with the figure. Too often artists will simply let the fabric hang on the figure without adding motion to the material. The result is that we have great sculpts with big, puffy clothing or a figure with no motion to the sculpture.<br />
Here are some simple things which an be done to the fabric to add motion:<br />
<br />
STARCH- many artists starch or otherwise treat the fabric. This works well but you run the risk of losing the form during shipping or using a much larger box to ship the "frozen" fabric. Larger box= more money!<br />
HEAT- This is a very simple way to make minor adjustments in clothing. I like to use the heat gun to make clothing sag on the body as real clothing does on our frames.<br />
WIRE- I like this technique because you can get more dramatic looks to cloth and they can still be shipped in a small space without worry of damaging the form of the cloth.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-422xSRsYpQA/Tv8whPRqZNI/AAAAAAAABaM/fEKU_79D-nA/s1600/Angel+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-422xSRsYpQA/Tv8whPRqZNI/AAAAAAAABaM/fEKU_79D-nA/s400/Angel+004.JPG" width="300" /></a></div> I am adding material to the piece to add another layer of color and texture to try and make her more interesting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rqawGGJHJUw/Tv8wqQN5RqI/AAAAAAAABaU/7kOqTEgpkUA/s1600/Angel+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rqawGGJHJUw/Tv8wqQN5RqI/AAAAAAAABaU/7kOqTEgpkUA/s320/Angel+005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>I cut a piece of blue material for the draping. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VEByd843Kq4/Tv8xZiyKrQI/AAAAAAAABac/isqROvL12YY/s1600/Angel+006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VEByd843Kq4/Tv8xZiyKrQI/AAAAAAAABac/isqROvL12YY/s320/Angel+006.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> Using glue, I turn a hem in the edges. Into this I insert a 20 gauge jewelry wire. For those who can sew a small seam, I always recommend sewing over gluing. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ABi5hh737eM/Tv8xie3BFlI/AAAAAAAABak/UZFSzUWZheA/s1600/Angel+007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ABi5hh737eM/Tv8xie3BFlI/AAAAAAAABak/UZFSzUWZheA/s320/Angel+007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> Three sides of the cloth have wire. The top edge is left without.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mfM1srdOyvw/Tv8xrSM6lmI/AAAAAAAABas/T7wJ1SMxDos/s1600/Angel+010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mfM1srdOyvw/Tv8xrSM6lmI/AAAAAAAABas/T7wJ1SMxDos/s320/Angel+010.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>The cloth is draped over the body so a wind-blown, flowing motion is created.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JWuXAbyA4cY/Tv8xz57gJdI/AAAAAAAABa0/mRx8ltYlfeA/s1600/Angel+011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JWuXAbyA4cY/Tv8xz57gJdI/AAAAAAAABa0/mRx8ltYlfeA/s320/Angel+011.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

Feathers can be treated like cloth if you are careful. Support the feather with a rounded form (in this case I use the handle of my sculpting knife) and apply heat from a heat gun. Keep the gun about 12" away from the feathers and heat them gradually so they will curve away from the heat.<br />

The hair was also heated from the same direction (your right) so it has tendrils which are blowing in the wind as well.<br />
Thanks for looking and have a great New Year!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaCmcvvV3BWSF2v4FXTtWzIH-Qg-KlswOj4Ac3bdxCFPIEf_9kYF_MYL6oCly4DCdY1A0UkVUEd49W8gaP9UgN261QrgiNqnZjdl92Q6PZIGOFQ4ZqlynsTMmghDOQEbYHDpZkbsRCZYg5/s1600/131.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaCmcvvV3BWSF2v4FXTtWzIH-Qg-KlswOj4Ac3bdxCFPIEf_9kYF_MYL6oCly4DCdY1A0UkVUEd49W8gaP9UgN261QrgiNqnZjdl92Q6PZIGOFQ4ZqlynsTMmghDOQEbYHDpZkbsRCZYg5/s320/131.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> Clay needs to be softened and conditioned before applying. I have found this easy approach. Place the clay on a heating pad. The clay needs to be unopened or in a clean plastic bag to keep it clean. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigRD8wUz2dBz8CtUjnXQP-RQ9c30aRRlLLW4qQEn3npFjrWqmpybuRdYsFPM1Jo5hQgKsz9Vc8091OQXfTDrkiQLMkxm5tjBVN-DTerv36nWN91-RLztb642tI1uhzjoAabTuIeg-6iLp1/s1600/132.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigRD8wUz2dBz8CtUjnXQP-RQ9c30aRRlLLW4qQEn3npFjrWqmpybuRdYsFPM1Jo5hQgKsz9Vc8091OQXfTDrkiQLMkxm5tjBVN-DTerv36nWN91-RLztb642tI1uhzjoAabTuIeg-6iLp1/s320/132.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Fold it over to sandwich the clay in the heating pad and let it warm up on "high" for about 15 minutes. The heating pad will not get the clay hot enough to start curing but will heat all the way through with out making the outside sticky. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIEMaY67O-q2vgPsTr52mQlDgCeYKV3SyGVuW1N9lrn6QaXVZGtzlWsI90AO98OBm59SrnIZQ-pxU7EQ1jbxHNEIQ9m1vx82DO5B6LnEOXINt9Xn2P13A1wY2aH2O5OWRCWTvMIJDXbsXn/s1600/133.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIEMaY67O-q2vgPsTr52mQlDgCeYKV3SyGVuW1N9lrn6QaXVZGtzlWsI90AO98OBm59SrnIZQ-pxU7EQ1jbxHNEIQ9m1vx82DO5B6LnEOXINt9Xn2P13A1wY2aH2O5OWRCWTvMIJDXbsXn/s320/133.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> After 15 minutes, the clay will cut like soft butter. Slice off the largest piece you can work with.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL_s0y2wBxL97QnV7S3_G6c9vyl7Pkc1rIaMQ0EB3vJOwzkHa-cQpj6BgZBrouxKOmW08jOsPGkjgGrqyb6yYhIUTxoGUZ0xGSokv0XLJNQVdVY58JsowSOIBzfRflBQdhXAIZM1M26Nxr/s1600/134.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL_s0y2wBxL97QnV7S3_G6c9vyl7Pkc1rIaMQ0EB3vJOwzkHa-cQpj6BgZBrouxKOmW08jOsPGkjgGrqyb6yYhIUTxoGUZ0xGSokv0XLJNQVdVY58JsowSOIBzfRflBQdhXAIZM1M26Nxr/s320/134.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>This is the first squeeze of this warmed clay. You will see how soft it gets this way. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmY8oExynr-KAf8s2XC5SAf3RGVh7p9cksAfCss6F9limmcslziZjBI1Ak0EOEuNzNjwfkAzf2hfujJ3PyW1W1A4EFgbvstO9BhYHs76sl1up3smkvDcvpiwP2c4BcgosmUSjB2Hww4DFq/s1600/135.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmY8oExynr-KAf8s2XC5SAf3RGVh7p9cksAfCss6F9limmcslziZjBI1Ak0EOEuNzNjwfkAzf2hfujJ3PyW1W1A4EFgbvstO9BhYHs76sl1up3smkvDcvpiwP2c4BcgosmUSjB2Hww4DFq/s320/135.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> The clay needs to be rolled and squeezed until it is conditioned for use.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiode57tAZfhfaaQQB9hvmgy-3fscjEFUSok3DPc6w3ZqDq8QFCdwoqDjpnKlrdYd6o7nYc97xtic0dK2d7Bt9RowbbZSZyGO9m0pHgUiiQc24jbtbuDWG-ly4jMMFd4AcufZonaIH91iXa/s1600/136.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiode57tAZfhfaaQQB9hvmgy-3fscjEFUSok3DPc6w3ZqDq8QFCdwoqDjpnKlrdYd6o7nYc97xtic0dK2d7Bt9RowbbZSZyGO9m0pHgUiiQc24jbtbuDWG-ly4jMMFd4AcufZonaIH91iXa/s320/136.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> The clay is ready when you can fold it over and it does not crack. You should be able to flatten the clay into a pancake and the edge will not crack either. If the edge cracks, keep rolling the clay between your hands.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh6NDuKh4g18ewi-WXqq_bUudxuvAnOVZRvl3YN5eXkqsbX_k3orO963k4JaiAugkvjq7bzOkePokotNIpM-OhnvdzjB4npdEYr5kprrxtYnFNiH2Uge7xqzch0k1G4be8aL6ZhYSDigDr/s1600/137.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh6NDuKh4g18ewi-WXqq_bUudxuvAnOVZRvl3YN5eXkqsbX_k3orO963k4JaiAugkvjq7bzOkePokotNIpM-OhnvdzjB4npdEYr5kprrxtYnFNiH2Uge7xqzch0k1G4be8aL6ZhYSDigDr/s320/137.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Apply the clay as a large sheet or mass of clay.
